Prelude Music Foundation’s mission is to transform the lives of children in Houston through the power of music. We teach Music Together®, a research-based music and movement program, to children in low income schools on a weekly basis. We also provide proffessional development to classroom teachers, giving them the tools and support for implementing musical learning. Aural, visual and kinesthetic methods are utilized to support all learning styles. Our dream is that one day the lives of all children in Houston will be enriched, empowered and inspired by music-making.
Each week, the Prelude Music Foundation sends trained Music Together teachers from Prelude Music Classes for Children into pre-kindergarten classrooms. Foundation teachers lead the students and their classroom teachers in a weekly music and movement session. Each child receives materials to bring home, including a songbook, CD, and parent education resources. The Foundation offers training and mentorship to the classroom teachers, so that they learn how to use music as a teaching tool in their classrooms.
At the end of each semester, the Foundation provides the students with an in-school concert experience featuring professional musicians from Prelude Music Classes for Children and the Houston Symphony. Parents are invited to attend and encouraged to join in singing the songs from that semester’s curriculum. Community Embedded Musicians from the Houston Symphony accompany our family engagement concerts twice a year in every school. In addition to participating in the concerts, these musicians visit each classroom during music class giving the children, many of which have never seen an instrument up close, an intimate way of experiencing professional music-making with a violin, viola, and cello or bass. Not only do the students have a personal experience with the instruments, they also get to make music with these wonderful musicians. Starting this 2018/2019 school year, Mercury Chamber Orchestra will join the Foundation as a professional musical partner, attending classrooms and concerts at Shearn Elementary and Fonwood Early Childhood Center.
We currently bring music to over 850 pre-kindergarten students in 5 Houston Independent schools: Fonwood Early Childhood Center, KIPP Zenith Academy, Ninfa Laurenzo Early Childhood Center , Fraga PreK, Ripley House, and Shearn Elementary. We recently started bringing music to children and caregivers at Casa de Esperanza and have partnered with Be the Peace - Be the Hope, bringing healing through music to children at-risk. Our goal for the this year is to serve over 1000 students in the Houston area. The Foundation has connected with close to 1900 students since our founding in 2014.
Prelude Music Foundation teaches music to the children that need it most. Research has shown that all children thrive when they have music in their lives. Music helps children to feel and express their emotions in a healthy way. Music also supports cognitive, language, social, emotional and physical development. Furthermore, music builds community and relationships. It is the great equalizer and a healing tool to both children and grownups alike.
